The video essay Runenhäuser takes up the nationalist-esoteric charge of half-timbered houses as “rune houses” and as backdrop-like reconstruction architecture, using the example of Frankfurt’s new old town. Continuities and ruptures become visible between historical architecture, homely backdrop, and contemporary reconstruction: to this day, individual struts are interpreted as supposed runes on tourist information boards such as those on the German Half-Timbered Road. The houses filmed along the German Half-Timbered Road bend in the curvature of the camera lens – how stable is which construction?
